My first experience in education overseas was as an exchange student in Paris for my junior year of college. While it was not without its challenges, it opened my eyes to the beauty of Europe and living abroad. More importantly, it was also an opportunity to meet students from all over the world and engage in dialogue to start to see the world from different perspectives.
Ten years later, I was back overseas as an international school counselor, first in the Philippines and then Japan. During this time as an educator in Asia, I supported students in their own education journey while living internationally. My students were mostly “expats” living overseas. Their parents had jobs in government or industries with hubs and offices in Asia.
My family then returned to Seattle for several years to be close to our families, and I was a school counselor at a local independent school. After twelve years back in Seattle, my family and I headed back out again, this time to Hong Kong where I currently reside and work as a school counselor at an international school.
I have worked with students from over 45 countries, and each year my students apply to over a dozen countries worldwide. My students have attended international schools that offered American Curriculum, like the AP or the IB (International Baccalaureate). Approximately half of my students have matriculated to the USA. Europe and the UK are the next popular destinations, with Canada, Hong Kong and Australia being regular destinations as well.
My hope is to support you as you begin to plan your next learning journey, whether that is in the USA or beyond.
